JL Turf Group & A1 Rubber:
High-Performance Sports Fields with Upcycled Rubber Underlays
When installing a FIFA-compliant synthetic football pitch at Fraser Park in Marrickville, Sydney, JL Turf Group required a sports underlay that could deliver both performance and durability.
Using A1 Rubber’s AeroRoll sports underlay, the team installed a shock-absorbing layer beneath more than 9,000 m² of synthetic turf, ensuring the field met strict performance requirements while benefiting from materials manufactured using upcycled tyre rubber.

High-drainage synthetic turf system
The Challenge
Installing a professional-level football pitch involves far more than laying synthetic grass.
To meet FIFA performance standards, the field must incorporate multiple engineered layers, including drainage systems, shock-absorbing pads and specialised infill materials.
For the Fraser Park project, JL Turf Group needed an underlay that could deliver:
- Reliable shock absorption for player safety
- Strong drainage performance in a flood-prone location
- Structural density to prevent the layer floating during flooding events
- Consistent quality across a large-scale installation
With more than 9,000 m² of surface area, the project also required a supplier capable of delivering large volumes while maintaining consistent product quality.
The Solution: AeroRoll Sports Underlay
To meet these requirements, JL Turf Group installed A1 Rubber’s AeroRoll sports underlay, a high-performance rubber underlay designed to enhance the safety and functionality of synthetic sports surfaces.
Manufactured in Australia using polymerically bound upcycled rubber buffings, AeroRoll transforms waste tyre rubber into durable sports infrastructure materials.
The installation system used at Fraser Park included:
-
Drainage-cell layer
-
AeroRoll shock-absorbing underlay
-
Synthetic turf surface
-
Sand infill and performance infill
This layered system helps deliver a field surface that meets professional sporting standards while providing enhanced comfort and safety for players.
Key Product Used
AeroRoll Sports Underlay
A1 Rubber’s AeroRoll is a specialised sports underlay designed to support synthetic turf performance in professional and community sporting venues.
Manufactured in Australia from upcycled rubber materials, AeroRoll offers a combination of durability, cushioning and drainage performance.
Key benefits include:
-
Excellent shock absorption for player safety
-
Strong drainage capability for wet conditions
-
High-density structure that resists flotation during flooding
-
Long-term durability under heavy sporting use
-
Multiple density options for different sports applications
AeroRoll is FIFA-rated for soccer fields and is also used beneath synthetic surfaces for sports including:
-
Hockey
-
Tennis
-
Multi-sport courts
-
Community recreational fields
The material maintains its performance over time and does not compress or deform significantly under prolonged use or weather exposure.
Large-Scale Supply and Logistics
Delivering the required materials for a project of this scale required careful coordination.
For the Fraser Park field, A1 Rubber supplied more than 90 bulk rolls of AeroRoll, each weighing over 600 kilograms.
The shipment was delivered to site using three B-double truckloads, ensuring JL Turf Group had the materials needed to complete the installation efficiently.
Maintaining consistent product quality across such a large order was critical to the project’s success.
A Trusted Partnership
JL Turf Group has extensive experience installing synthetic turf across a wide range of sporting and recreational environments.
Founded by twin brothers Luke and Josh Packham, the company has relied on A1 Rubber products since its early projects.
“A1 Rubber has always had an outstanding reputation for quality and on-time delivery,” says JL Turf Group owner Luke Packham.
For the Fraser Park project, that reputation was reinforced.
“A1 Rubber delivered over 90 bulk rolls on time, and the quality was faultless,” Luke says.
“That’s why we’ve always felt safe using A1 Rubber. There are competitors, but with the amount of rolls provided, to have had zero faults in the pad… I can’t find words to say how happy I am with A1 Rubber.”
Supporting Sustainable Sports Infrastructure
Through projects like Fraser Park, A1 Rubber continues to demonstrate how upcycled tyre rubber can support high-performance sports infrastructure.
By transforming waste rubber into durable sports underlays and surfacing products, A1 Rubber helps deliver fields that meet professional performance standards while supporting sustainable material use.
